What Is Granulomatous Mastitis?

Granulomatous Mastitis (GM) is a rare inflammatory breast condition that can cause breast masses, pain, swelling, redness, abscesses, and significant emotional stress. Although it can resemble breast cancer on examination and imaging, GM is a benign condition that requires specialized diagnosis and treatment.

Diagnosis often requires a biopsy because imaging alone cannot reliably distinguish GM from cancer or infection. Treatment varies by case — observation, steroids, methotrexate, drainage, and sometimes surgery — and recurrence is common.
